So I’ve been told people with Social Security numbers ending in 00-20 have already received their stimulus package. Those ending in 21-75 will be getting them May 9, and 76-99 will receive them on May 16. I fall in the group that should see them today! From the sounds of these folks in Minnesota, the checks will be doing exactly what the gov’t was planning them to do, be spent. Granted, some on things that would be better off saved, but then again, not everyone reads personal finance blogs, eh?
When should I expect the cash?
The order in which the IRS sends out payments will be based on Social Security numbers. If your return was processed by April 15, here’s what you can expect:
Taxes and money can be funny, honey!
A few of the responses you see from people will certainly get a good laugh out of you. My favorite is the guy that says, “I’ll probably spend it at the casino.” Oh boy, I can think of much better ways to spend it, but then again, I’ve clearly got a different mindset and that’s exactly what the government DOESN’T want you to do with it. They’re hoping you spend it, and spend it quick!

Yikes, gambling? Talk about a waste. What are the chances that the guy that said that has some debt he could use paying off or a Roth that’s underfunded?

Hank, I don’t think even Congress believes spending the stimulus checks will have an impact on the economy. Their real goal was to show that they care and to reinforce the idea that they’re taking care of us.

@ Aaron - Well, not being a political blog I don’t want to delve too deep into that point, but my guess is that it was a last ditch effort to make the last 8 years look like it was close to the boom Bill Clinton drove us through…

I have yet to receive my check. I was happy to hear that because I did direct deposit that I wouldn’t have been dead last. My last numbers might as well be 99.
The government wants you to spend the money right away, but that only helps things in the short term and doesn’t help the real reason America is in this situation in the first place. Paying down debt is one of the best ways Americans can spend this money. It helps the banks, reduces your debt and keeps the money in the USA. Like many people have said, this $150 billion didn’t just grow on a tree. We will be paying for that later.
